Weather balloons transporting thousands of packs of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as Vilnius Airport was compelled to shut down for hours when multiple of them drifted across the national airspace.
Air Travel Interruptions
The airport closure led to thirty canceled flights disrupting thousands of passengers, with officials warning that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Border security stated that twenty-five weather balloons were detected entering Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with a pair of them ending up right above the main terminal.
As many as 14 of the atmospheric instruments sent during the weekend drifted across the Vilnius area, which is situated near Lithuania's main urban center and near the Belarusian boundary.
Contraband Recovery
At least 11 balloons containing 18,000 packs of black-market cigarettes have now been retrieved, though this number could rise, according to border security officials.
Regional Smuggling Pattern
While creating issues, officials emphasized that "Balloons with contraband - cigarettes from Belarus - are nothing new in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
To date in the current year, 544 balloons have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were recorded last year.
Neighboring Country Impact
Simultaneously, the north-eastern Polish territory, which also borders Belarus, has recorded more than one hundred incidents in which smuggled items were delivered from its adjacent country employing the balloons.
Criminal Methodology
When questioned about why criminals use a method that is particularly vulnerable to weather factors rather than simpler to operate drones, representatives elaborated that "Atmospheric equipment are simple mechanisms used by contraband transporters - they are less expensive than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Border Protection Aims
Representatives further stated that "Our services' aim is to confiscate the maximum possible amounts of illegal goods and to apprehend coordinators and perpetrators so that this activity become unprofitable and create minimal risk to commercial air travel."
International Concerns
Such border infiltrations occur during a time of increased concerns in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have resulted in flight interruptions across the region.
Parallel situations in adjacent nations have led European authorities to speed up talks about improving airspace protection throughout the region.
